Banana Reef

One of the first Maldivian sites ever dived and still one of the best in the atoll, Banana Reef curves like its namesake fruit with a protected inside and a current-brushed outer edge. Overhangs and cuts shelter squirrelfish and packs of oriental sweetlips; Napoleon wrasse cruise the drop-off, and when the tide pushes, snapper stack into the eddies in their thousands. The topography — ledges, canyons, a cave-pocked wall — carries the dive even on a slack tide, which is why every Malé operator keeps it in rotation.
